iPhone 15 Keeps Dropping Wi-Fi After iOS 18 Update — The Exact Setting That Fixed It

If you updated your iPhone 15 to iOS 18 and your Wi-Fi connection started dropping every few minutes — reconnecting on its own, or requiring you to toggle Wi-Fi off and back on just to load a page — you are dealing with a specific bug introduced in iOS 18's Wi-Fi power management module. This is not a hardware problem. It is not your router. And the standard "forget network and reconnect" advice that every generic guide gives you will not fix it.

I know this because I went through it myself for eleven days before finding the actual cause.

What's Actually Happening (Not the Generic Explanation)

iOS 18 introduced a change to how iPhones manage Wi-Fi power consumption when the screen is off or the phone is idle. The new behavior is designed to reduce battery drain by periodically dropping the Wi-Fi connection and switching to a low-power state — then reconnecting when the phone detects activity.

The problem: on iPhone 15 models specifically, this power management cycle is miscalibrated in iOS 18.0 through 18.2. The phone drops the Wi-Fi connection more aggressively than intended, and on certain router configurations — particularly dual-band routers that broadcast both 2.4GHz and 5GHz on the same SSID — the reconnection process fails silently. The phone shows full Wi-Fi bars but is not actually passing data.

This is why you see full signal but pages won't load. The connection icon is showing the last known state, not the current one.

The Exact Fix — Two Steps, Both Required

Step 1 — Disable Wi-Fi Assist and turn off Auto-Join for the affected network

Go to Settings > Wi-Fi > tap the (i) icon next to your connected network > scroll down and turn off "Auto-Join" for that specific network.

Then go to Settings > Cellular > scroll all the way to the bottom > turn off "Wi-Fi Assist."

Wi-Fi Assist is the feature that automatically switches your phone to cellular data when Wi-Fi is "weak." In iOS 18 on iPhone 15, it's being triggered by the momentary drop caused by the power management bug — and when it activates, it interferes with the Wi-Fi reconnection process, creating a loop where neither connection works properly. Turning it off removes that interference.

Turning off Auto-Join for the specific network forces iOS to maintain the connection more actively rather than passively managing it through the background scheduler that contains the bug.

Step 2 — Change your router's band steering setting

This is the step that actually resolves the root cause rather than just managing the symptom.

If your router broadcasts 2.4GHz and 5GHz on the same network name (same SSID), it uses a feature called "band steering" to automatically assign your device to whichever band it thinks is better. iOS 18's miscalibrated power cycle interacts badly with band steering — when the phone drops to its low-power state and tries to reconnect, the router's band steering algorithm sometimes assigns it to a different band than it was previously on, and iOS 18 fails to complete the handoff cleanly.

The fix: log into your router's admin panel (typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in your browser) and either:

Option A — Disable band steering entirely and let devices choose their band manually. This is the simpler option. Your iPhone will stay on whichever band it connected to initially and won't get bounced between them during reconnection.

Option B — Create two separate SSIDs for your 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands (for example, "HomeNetwork_2G" and "HomeNetwork_5G") and connect your iPhone 15 specifically to the 5GHz network. The 5GHz band has shorter range but more consistent performance for stationary use, and the separate SSID eliminates the band switching entirely.

I used Option B. The Wi-Fi dropping stopped completely within 10 minutes of making the change.

Why "Forget Network and Reconnect" Doesn't Work

Every generic troubleshooting guide starts with "forget the network, reconnect, and if that doesn't work, reset network settings." I tried both of those. They don't address this specific issue because they don't change the power management behavior or the band steering interaction — the two things that are actually causing the problem. You forget the network, reconnect, and the exact same cycle resumes because nothing about the underlying cause has changed.

Resetting network settings does clear the Wi-Fi configuration, but it also wipes all your saved networks, VPN configurations, and Bluetooth pairings — which is an unnecessary disruption when the actual fix is two targeted setting changes.

Confirming the Fix Worked

After making both changes, here is how to confirm the problem is resolved rather than temporarily masked:

Leave your iPhone screen off for 10 minutes, then pick it up and immediately try to load a webpage without touching the Wi-Fi toggle. If the page loads within 3 to 5 seconds, the fix worked. If the page hangs and you need to toggle Wi-Fi, the issue is still present and your router may require a firmware update before Option A or B fully resolves it.

Check your router manufacturer's website for a firmware update — routers released before 2024 sometimes need a firmware patch to handle iOS 18's reconnection behavior correctly even after the SSID change.

Pro Tip: Check iOS Version Before Anything Else

Before spending any time troubleshooting Wi-Fi issues on an iPhone 15, go to Settings > General > About and check your iOS version.

If you're on iOS 18.3 or later, Apple has partially addressed this power management bug in those updates — the fix described above may still help if you're experiencing residual issues, but updating to the latest iOS version should be your first step. The band steering interaction was significantly improved in iOS 18.3.

If you're on iOS 18.0, 18.1, or 18.2, the bug is present in full force and the router-side fix above is currently the most reliable resolution while on those versions.

Checking your iOS version first tells you immediately whether you're dealing with the unpatched version of this bug or a residual issue from an older configuration — and that changes the order of steps worth trying.
