My Amazon Echo Dot had worked without a single problem for nearly two years. Then one morning it showed as offline in the Alexa app, the ring light was orange instead of blue, and every command I gave got the same response: "Sorry, I'm having trouble understanding you right now" or complete silence.
The power was fine. My internet was working. Every other device on my network was connected. Just the Echo was offline — and it stayed that way for three days while I tried every generic fix suggested in Amazon's support articles. None of them worked.
What finally fixed it was a specific combination of two issues that almost always occur together but are almost never mentioned together in any single guide: a stale DNS cache entry in my router, and the Echo attempting to connect to the wrong Wi-Fi band. Here's exactly what was happening and how I resolved it.
What the Orange Ring Light Actually Means — Not What Amazon's Help Page Says
Amazon's documentation says an orange ring light means the device is in setup mode or having trouble connecting to the internet. That's technically accurate but useless for diagnosis because it applies to four completely different underlying problems.
The orange light specifically means the Echo has lost its connection to Amazon's Alexa Voice Service (AVS) servers. It does not mean your Echo can't connect to Wi-Fi — your Echo can be fully connected to your Wi-Fi network and still show orange if it can't reach Amazon's servers. This distinction matters enormously because most troubleshooting guides treat "orange light" as a Wi-Fi problem when it's often a server-reaching problem on a working Wi-Fi connection.
The Four Specific Causes of Echo Offline Status
Cause 1 — Stale DNS cache entry pointing to an outdated Amazon server IP Amazon's Alexa Voice Service IP addresses change periodically. Your router caches DNS entries — the translation between Amazon's server domain names and their IP addresses — for a period set in your router's DNS TTL (Time To Live) configuration. If Amazon's servers moved to a new IP address and your router's cache still has the old IP, your Echo connects to Wi-Fi perfectly but sends its requests to an IP address that no longer serves Alexa — and never gets a response. This causes permanent offline status until the DNS cache expires or is manually cleared.
Cause 2 — Echo connected to 2.4GHz band while router's 5GHz congestion is forcing band steering Echos connect exclusively to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi — they do not support 5GHz. On dual-band routers with band steering enabled (same SSID for both bands), the router sometimes attempts to steer the Echo toward 5GHz as part of its optimization algorithm. Since the Echo can't connect to 5GHz, it gets bounced back and forth between bands in a loop, appearing connected but actually unable to maintain a stable session long enough to authenticate with Amazon's servers.
Cause 3 — Amazon's Alexa server experiencing a regional outage Alexa outages are more frequent than Amazon publicly acknowledges and are not always reflected on Amazon's official service status page. Third-party tracking at downdetector.com/status/amazon-alexa is a more reliable indicator of regional outages than Amazon's own status page.
Cause 4 — Amazon account deauthorization after a password change or security event If you recently changed your Amazon account password, enabled two-factor authentication, or triggered a security review on your account, your Echo may have been deauthorized as a trusted device. In this case, the Echo is offline because its device certificate has expired or been revoked — not because of any network issue.
The Exact Fix — Two Steps That Resolve Causes 1 and 2 Simultaneously
Step 1 — Clear your router's DNS cache
Log into your router's admin panel (typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in your browser). The admin credentials are usually printed on a sticker on the router — look for "Admin" and "Password."
Navigate to the DNS settings — this is usually under "Advanced," "Network," or "Internet" depending on your router brand. Look for a "Flush DNS Cache" button or equivalent. On Netgear routers it's under Advanced > Setup > Internet Setup > "Release" then "Renew." On TP-Link routers it's under Advanced > Network > Internet > Renew. On Eero and Orbi (mesh routers), restart the router from the router's app — this automatically flushes the DNS cache.
After flushing the DNS cache, your router fetches fresh IP addresses for Amazon's servers on its next DNS lookup — which is the correct current address rather than the stale cached one.
Step 2 — Create a separate 2.4GHz SSID and reconnect your Echo to it
If your router broadcasts both bands on the same SSID, go into your router's wireless settings and create a separate SSID for the 2.4GHz band — for example, "HomeNetwork_2G" alongside your existing "HomeNetwork." Disable band steering for this new SSID.
In the Alexa app: Devices > select your Echo > Change > Wi-Fi Network > connect the Echo to the new 2.4GHz-only SSID. With a dedicated 2.4GHz network, the router can no longer attempt to steer the Echo toward 5GHz, eliminating the band-switching loop permanently.
Fix for Cause 4 — Amazon Account Deauthorization
Open the Alexa app > Devices > select the offline Echo > Deregister. Confirm deregistration.
Then go through the Echo setup process again: in the Alexa app tap the "+" icon > Add Device > Amazon Echo > select your Echo model > follow the setup. During setup, the Echo will connect to Amazon's servers using fresh device credentials and re-register to your account.
Deregistering and re-registering does not delete your Alexa routines, smart home configurations, or skills — these are stored in your Amazon account, not on the device. Everything reloads automatically when the device re-registers.
What to Do if the Orange Light Persists After Both Fixes
If the orange light is still present after clearing DNS and creating a dedicated 2.4GHz SSID, check the Alexa service status at downdetector.com/status/amazon-alexa. If there's a regional outage affecting your area, nothing you do to your device or network will resolve the offline status — the fix is waiting for Amazon to restore service.
If the status page shows no outages and both fixes are applied, perform a factory reset on the Echo as a last resort: press and hold the Action button (the dot button) for 25 seconds until the orange light spins, then turns off, then turns blue. The device returns to factory state and the setup process starts fresh. This resolves software corruption in the Echo's firmware that can sometimes persist through normal troubleshooting steps.
Pro Tip: Set a Static DNS Server on Your Router to Prevent Stale Cache Issues
After my Echo offline experience, I changed my router's DNS settings to use a public DNS service — specifically Google's DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) — instead of my ISP's default DNS server.
ISP-provided DNS servers are notorious for having long cache TTLs — they hold onto old DNS entries for much longer than the domain owner specifies, because a longer cache reduces the ISP's server load. This means when Amazon updates its server IPs, your ISP's DNS server might keep serving the old IP for days.
Google's and Cloudflare's (1.1.1.1) public DNS servers respect the TTL values that domain owners set and flush entries promptly when they expire. This means your router always has current IP addresses for Amazon's servers, and the stale DNS cache issue that caused my three-day outage simply doesn't occur.
To change DNS on most routers: admin panel > Internet or WAN settings > DNS Server > change "Automatic" to "Manual" > enter 8.8.8.8 as the primary DNS and 8.8.4.4 as the secondary. This change affects every device on your network and generally improves DNS resolution speed as well — ISP DNS servers are often slower than public alternatives.
