My Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 started going offline two or three times a week about six months after I installed it. At first I thought it was a battery issue — but it's hardwired. Then I thought it was Wi-Fi signal strength — but it showed three bars in the Ring app before every dropout. Then I thought it was a Ring server outage — but the outages only happened at my house, and only to the Ring.
After weeks of troubleshooting, I found the actual cause: a combination of a Wi-Fi channel conflict between my Ring doorbell and a neighbor's router, and a DHCP lease exhaustion issue on my router that was silently dropping Ring's network connection every few days. Neither issue is obvious to find because Ring's in-app troubleshooting only checks signal strength — not channel conflicts or DHCP status.
Here's exactly what I found and the specific settings changes that stopped the dropouts entirely.
Why Ring Doorbells Go Offline Even With Strong Wi-Fi Signal
Signal strength (the bars in the Ring app) and connection quality are two completely different things. You can have full signal bars and still have a dysfunctional Wi-Fi connection if the channel your router is using is congested or conflicting.
Wi-Fi operates on specific channels within the 2.4GHz band (channels 1 through 11 in the US, with 1, 6, and 11 being non-overlapping). Ring Video Doorbell devices use 2.4GHz exclusively. If your router and a nearby router are both using the same channel — or overlapping channels — the interference causes packet loss and connection timeouts even when signal strength appears strong. The Ring app's signal meter measures signal level (how loud the signal is), not signal quality (how clean it is). A loud, noisy signal causes exactly the same connection failures as a weak signal, but shows as full bars.
DHCP lease exhaustion is a separate but equally common cause. Your router assigns IP addresses to devices on your network through DHCP — each assignment is a "lease" that expires after a set period. When the lease expires, the device requests a renewal. If your router's DHCP pool is full (you have more devices than available IP addresses in the pool), or if the lease renewal fails for any reason, the Ring doorbell loses its IP address and drops offline. Since Ring doorbells often sit idle for hours without sending data, their DHCP lease renewal is lower priority than active devices — and they're more likely to lose their lease when the pool is stressed.
Diagnosing Your Specific Cause
Check for channel conflicts first (takes 2 minutes):
Download a free Wi-Fi analyzer app on your Android phone — "WiFi Analyzer" by farproc is reliable and free. Open it and look at the channel graph view. This shows every nearby Wi-Fi network and which channel they're using.
Look at where your network appears on the graph versus where your neighbors' networks appear. If your network and one or more neighbor networks share the same channel peak — or if the peaks overlap significantly — channel conflict is your problem.
Check DHCP lease status (takes 3 minutes):
Log into your router's admin panel > look for DHCP Client List or Connected Devices. Count how many devices are listed. Then find your router's DHCP pool size — usually under LAN Settings or DHCP Settings — and check the range (for example, 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.199 is a pool of 100 addresses). If the number of connected devices is close to or exceeds the pool size, DHCP exhaustion is contributing.
Also look at the lease time setting. A lease time of 24 hours or less means devices must renew frequently. A lease time of 1 hour (some ISP-provided routers default to this) means Ring must successfully renew its IP every hour — and any failure during that renewal causes an offline drop.
The Exact Fix for Channel Conflict
Step 1 — Change your router to a non-conflicting channel manually
Log into your router admin panel > Wireless Settings > 2.4GHz band > Channel > change from "Auto" to a specific channel.
Based on your Wi-Fi analyzer scan, choose whichever of channels 1, 6, or 11 has the least neighboring network activity. Most routers default to Auto channel selection, which changes channels periodically — this periodic channel change causes Ring dropouts because Ring loses its connection momentarily whenever the channel changes and doesn't always reconnect cleanly.
Setting a fixed channel eliminates both the channel conflict (if you choose the least congested option) and the periodic channel-change disconnection simultaneously.
Step 2 — Set channel width to 20MHz only for 2.4GHz
In the same wireless settings, find "Channel Width" or "Bandwidth" for the 2.4GHz band. If it's set to "Auto" or "20/40MHz," change it to "20MHz only."
40MHz channel width on 2.4GHz doubles the channel's bandwidth but makes interference significantly worse — it occupies more of the limited 2.4GHz spectrum and conflicts with more neighboring networks. 20MHz is narrower, more stable, and far less susceptible to interference in congested environments. Ring devices are not bandwidth-hungry (they don't need 40MHz), so the narrower channel has no practical downside.
The Exact Fix for DHCP Lease Issues
Step 1 — Assign a static IP address to your Ring doorbell
Log into your router admin panel > DHCP Settings > look for "Address Reservation," "Static DHCP," or "DHCP Reservation." Find your Ring doorbell in the current DHCP client list (it will show its MAC address alongside its current IP) > add a reservation for that MAC address with the current IP it's using.
This tells your router to always give the Ring doorbell the same IP address and to never reclaim that address from the pool — even if Ring goes quiet for days. DHCP lease expiration is eliminated as a cause of disconnection.
Step 2 — Increase your DHCP lease time if you can't set a reservation
If your router doesn't support DHCP reservations (common on older ISP-provided routers), increase the DHCP lease time to 72 hours or "Forever" if that option is available. A longer lease means Ring doesn't need to renew its IP address as often, which dramatically reduces the frequency of potential renewal failures.
Step 3 — Expand your DHCP pool size if it's near capacity
If your DHCP client list shows you're near the pool limit, expand the pool: in DHCP settings, change the IP range to include more addresses. For example, if your current pool is 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.149 (50 addresses), change the end to 192.168.1.200 (101 addresses). This gives your router room to assign addresses without competition.
What to Do if Ring Still Goes Offline After Both Fixes
If channel conflict and DHCP are resolved but Ring still drops offline periodically, check the Ring app's Device Health page for your doorbell > "Signal Strength (RSSI)." An RSSI value above -60 (closer to zero) is good. An RSSI between -60 and -70 is marginal. Below -70 is the threshold where physical distance and walls are causing actual signal degradation.
For marginal RSSI with a fixed channel and stable DHCP, the fix is either a Wi-Fi range extender placed between your router and the doorbell, or moving your router closer to the front door if possible.
Pro Tip: Set Up Ring's "Preferred Network" to Prevent Automatic Band Switching
In newer Ring app versions, go to the Ring app > your device > Device Settings > Network > you may see a "Preferred Network" option. Set this to your specific 2.4GHz network name explicitly.
Without this setting, some Ring devices attempt to roam between nearby Wi-Fi networks or between your router's 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands if they share the same SSID name. Every time Ring switches networks, it briefly goes offline while re-authenticating — which shows as dropouts even when all your network settings are correct.
Locking Ring to a specific preferred network eliminates network-roaming dropouts entirely and is the fastest single change to make if your Ring doorbell drops offline every time a device on your network changes its Wi-Fi state.
