You press the power button on your Nintendo Switch and nothing happens. No screen. No Nintendo logo. Just black. Or maybe it shows a battery icon with a tiny sliver of red, but even after charging for hours, it still won't turn on.
I've had this happen twice — once with my Switch and once with my nephew's. Both times, the obvious things (charging it, waiting longer) didn't work right away. Here's what finally got them working again, explained in the simplest way possible.
Understanding Why This Happens
Your Nintendo Switch has a rechargeable battery, just like your phone. But unlike your phone, if the Switch battery drains completely to zero — not just low, but completely empty — it enters what Nintendo calls "deep sleep" or a completely discharged state. When this happens, the Switch behaves differently from a normal dead battery situation:
- It won't respond to the power button at all
- It won't show any charging indicator for the first 10 to 30 minutes of charging
- It may feel like the charger isn't working even when it is
This is the most common cause of a Switch that "won't turn on" — and the good news is it's completely fixable.
Step 1 — Use the Right Charger (This Matters More Than You Think)
The Nintendo Switch is picky about chargers. It uses a USB-C port — the same type of connector as many Android phones and laptops — but not every USB-C charger works well with the Switch.
What works best:
- The official Nintendo Switch AC adapter that came with your Switch
- A USB-C charger rated at 18W or higher (look for the wattage written on the charger itself)

To force restart it: Press and hold the power button on the top of the Switch for 12 full seconds. Keep holding even if nothing appears to happen. After 12 seconds, let go.

If the Switch was frozen rather than completely dead, it will turn on now. This works because holding the power button for 12 seconds forces the Switch to cut all power and restart completely — the same as pulling a battery out and putting it back in, except you don't have to do that.

If the force restart didn't work, your battery is likely in that deeply discharged state mentioned earlier.
Plug your Switch into its official charger or dock. Put it somewhere and don't touch it, don't press buttons, don't pick it up. Set a timer for 30 minutes.
After 30 minutes, press the power button once. If the battery was deeply discharged, 30 minutes of uninterrupted charging is usually enough to bring it out of deep sleep and get to the Nintendo logo screen.
The key word is "uninterrupted." Every time you pick it up and press buttons while it's in this state, you interrupt the charging process. Many people keep picking it up every few minutes to "check," and this actually slows down the recovery. Leave it completely alone for 30 minutes.
Step 4 — The Combination Reset (For When Nothing Else Works)
If 30 minutes of charging didn't help, try this specific sequence:
- Plug the Switch into its charger
- While it's plugged in, press and hold the power button AND the volume up button AND the volume down button all at the same time
- Hold all three buttons for 12 seconds
- Let go of all three buttons
- Wait 30 seconds
- Press the power button once
This combination resets the Switch's power management system — the internal component that decides whether the battery has enough charge to start up. Sometimes this system gets confused and thinks the battery is too low to start even when it isn't. The combination reset clears that confusion.
After this reset, if the Switch still doesn't turn on, leave it on the charger for another hour and try the power button again.
What Happened in My Situation
The first time my Switch wouldn't turn on, it had been sitting in a drawer for about four months without being charged. A phone charger was the only one I had nearby, and after plugging it in for two hours nothing happened.
The fix: I found the official Nintendo charger, plugged it in, and left it completely alone for 45 minutes. When I came back and pressed the power button, it turned on normally.
The second time (my nephew's Switch) was different — it had been used recently but got dropped. The force restart (holding the power button for 12 seconds) worked within 10 seconds.
