Apple iPhone Upgrade Program Not Working? Here's How to Fix Every Common Issue

New iPhone in Apple Store box — Apple iPhone Upgrade Program troubleshooting guide

The Apple iPhone Upgrade Program lets you upgrade to a new iPhone every year — but the process involves Citizens One financing, Apple's identity verification, and trade-in logistics that can all go sideways. Here's what breaks, by platform, and how to fix it.

iPhone (iOS) — Apple Store App Issues

Problem: Upgrade Eligibility Not Showing

If you're enrolled in the IUP but your upgrade option isn't appearing in the Apple Store app:

  1. Open the Apple Store app → Account (person icon) → Apple iPhone Upgrade Program.
  2. If it shows "Not Eligible," check your payment count. You must have made at least 12 monthly payments to be eligible for an annual upgrade — or 24 payments for a full payoff upgrade.
  3. Sign out of the Apple Store app and sign back in with your Apple ID — eligibility status sometimes fails to sync until a fresh login.
  4. If your payment history looks correct but eligibility still won't show, call Citizens One directly: 1-800-708-6800 — they manage the financing side separately from Apple.

Problem: Apple Store App Crashing During Upgrade

  1. Update the Apple Store app: open the App Store → tap your profile icon → scroll to see if Apple Store has a pending update.
  2. Go to Settings → [Your Name] → Sign Out, then sign back into your Apple ID in the Store app.
  3. If crashing persists, complete the upgrade at apple.com/shop in Safari instead — the web flow is identical to the app flow.

Mac / Browser — Web-Based Upgrade Issues

Problem: Identity Verification Failing at Checkout

Apple uses a third-party identity verification step during IUP checkout that fails for roughly 10–15% of users on the first attempt.

  1. Use Safari on a Mac or iPhone — Apple's identity verification flow is optimized for Safari and frequently fails in Chrome or Firefox.
  2. Disable any content blockers or VPNs for the apple.com domain during checkout.
  3. Have your driver's license or state ID ready — the verification requires a live photo scan of your ID, not just your SSN or card number.
  4. If the scan fails repeatedly, Apple offers a phone-based verification alternative: call 1-800-275-2273 and ask for IUP support.

Problem: Trade-In Credit Not Applying at Checkout

  1. Confirm your trade-in was initiated before adding the new iPhone to cart — trade-in must be started first in the IUP flow.
  2. Check that your old iPhone is powered on, passcode-accessible, and not in Lost Mode — devices in Lost Mode return a $0 trade value.
  3. If your trade-in quote expired (quotes last 7 days), restart the trade-in process from the beginning at apple.com/shop/trade-in.

In-Store Pickup / Trade-In Problems

Problem: In-Store Pickup Appointment Not Available

New iPhone launch windows sell out in-store appointments within hours. If you can't get an in-store slot:

  • Select Ship to Home instead — IUP upgrades ship with the same priority as full-price purchases.
  • Check store availability at apple.com/retail after 8AM daily — cancelled appointments release overnight.
  • The Apple Store app refreshes availability every 15–30 minutes during launch periods; the website refreshes hourly.

Problem: Trade-In Device Rejected at the Store

Apple's in-store trade-in inspection can lower or void your quote if the device has:

  • A cracked screen or back glass (even hairline cracks)
  • Activation Lock still enabled — go to Settings → [Your Name] → Find My → Find My iPhone → turn off before arriving
  • Non-original Apple parts detected (common with third-party screen replacements)
  • A passcode that hasn't been removed — erase the device at Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content

Citizens One Financing Issues

Problem: Monthly Payment Not Processing

IUP payments are managed entirely by Citizens One, not Apple. If a payment fails:

  1. Log into your Citizens One account at citizensone.com/apple.
  2. Confirm your payment method is current — expired cards will cause silent payment failures that can affect upgrade eligibility.
  3. If you've moved or changed banks, update your autopay details before the next billing date.
  4. A single missed payment does not immediately affect upgrade eligibility, but two consecutive missed payments will suspend your IUP account.

Bottom Line

IUP issues almost always trace back to one of four things: payment count not yet at 12, identity verification failing in a non-Safari browser, Activation Lock still on the trade-in device, or a Citizens One account detail that's gone stale. Check payment count first, then clear Activation Lock and passcode from your trade-in device well before your appointment — those two steps alone prevent the majority of in-store problems.

YouTube Keeps Logging Me Out on Samsung Smart TV After the 2026 Update

If you've recently updated your Samsung Smart TV and now find yourself getting signed out of YouTube every few minutes, you're not alone. This issue spiked noticeably after the latest firmware rollout, and it's frustrating enough to make you want to throw the remote across the room. Here's what's actually going on, and how to fix it without resetting your entire TV.   Why This Is Happening The short version: the 2026 Tizen firmware update changed how Samsung TVs handle cached authentication tokens for third-party apps. YouTube relies on a locally stored session token to keep you logged in, and the update appears to be clearing or corrupting that token faster than it should — sometimes within minutes of signing in. This isn't a YouTube-side bug. It's a conflict between Samsung's updated app sandboxing and YouTube's token refresh cycle.   Common Fixes (Try These First) Restart the TV — Hold the power button for 5 seconds, not just a quick press. Amazon Order Stuck on "Preparing for Shipment" for Over a Week? Here's What's Really Happening

Your order says "Preparing for Shipment" and it hasn't moved in days. You've refreshed the tracking page a dozen times, maybe even called support and gotten a generic script read back to you. So what's actually going on, and is there anything you can do besides wait? Let's break it down. What "Preparing for Shipment" Actually Means This status doesn't mean your package is sitting untouched. It means Amazon's fulfillment center has confirmed your order but hasn't yet handed it off to a carrier for scanning. The label may already be printed. The item may already be boxed. It's the handoff step — between warehouse and shipping carrier — that's stalling. There are three common reasons this drags on past 2-3 days: Inventory mismatch — the system shows stock available, but the physical item isn't where it's expected to be in the warehouse, triggering a manual recount Carrier capacity issues — especially common arou...

Paid for YouTube Premium but Still Seeing Ads? Here's the Real Fix

You upgraded to YouTube Premium specifically to get rid of ads, and now they're still showing up. Before you contact support and sit through a generic troubleshooting script, here's what's actually causing this — and the fix that works when the obvious steps don't. The Three Most Common Reasons Premium Isn't Blocking Ads Not all ad situations are the same. Which one you're dealing with changes what you need to do. 1. Your account isn't signed in on the device showing ads This is the most common cause and the easiest to miss. YouTube Premium is tied to your Google account, not to the app or device. If you're watching while signed out — or signed into a different Google account — YouTube has no way of knowing you're a Premium subscriber. Check the account icon in the top-right corner of the YouTube app and confirm it shows your correct profile. 2. Your Premium subscription lapsed without warning YouTube sometimes fails to send a renewal failu...
