Can't Access Your Supplemental Security Income Info Online? Here's How to Fix It

Trying to check your SSI payment status, update your information, or manage your benefits through Social Security's online portal — and running into errors? You're not alone. Here are the five most common reasons SSA online access fails for SSI recipients, ranked from most to least frequent, with a fix for each.

Reason #5: Wrong Portal for SSI

Many people land on the wrong SSA page. Here's which portal does what:

  • my Social Security (ssa.gov/myaccount) — view your Social Security statement, manage direct deposit, check payment history. SSI recipients can use this portal.
  • SSA's iClaim / Benefits Portal — apply for benefits or check application status.
  • Login.gov / ID.me — the sign-in layer required to access all SSA portals since 2022.

Fix: Go directly to ssa.gov/myaccount and sign in with your Login.gov or ID.me credentials. Do not try to create a new SSA account — the SSA no longer issues its own login credentials.

Reason #4: Login.gov or ID.me Account Not Verified

SSA requires identity verification through Login.gov or ID.me before you can access any benefit information. If you created an account but never completed identity verification, you'll be blocked from the portal.

Fix for Login.gov:

  1. Go to login.gov and sign in.
  2. Go to Account Settings → Identity Verification.
  3. If it shows "Not Verified," click Verify Your Identity and follow the steps — you'll need a state-issued ID and your Social Security number.
  4. If online verification fails (it fails for roughly 1 in 5 users), choose the in-person verification option at a participating USPS location.

Fix for ID.me:

  1. Go to id.me and sign in.
  2. Under your account dashboard, check if your identity status shows as "Verified."
  3. If not, complete the selfie + ID photo verification step — ID.me requires a live selfie, not a still photo.

Reason #3: Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Code Not Arriving

Both Login.gov and ID.me use MFA. If your one-time code isn't arriving by text or email:

  • Check for carrier delays — SMS codes from government systems sometimes take 2–3 minutes. Wait before requesting a new code.
  • Check spam/junk folder — email codes from login.gov are frequently filtered.
  • Switch to an authenticator app — go to your Login.gov security settings and add Google Authenticator or Authy as your MFA method. Authenticator apps are more reliable than SMS for government portals.
  • Update your phone number — if you've changed numbers since creating your Login.gov account, update it at login.gov → Account Settings → Phone.

Reason #2: Browser or Cookie Issue Blocking the SSA Portal

The SSA portal and Login.gov use session cookies and JavaScript-heavy authentication flows that break in certain browser configurations.

Fix:

  1. Clear your browser cache and cookies: Chrome → Settings → Privacy and Security → Clear browsing data (select Cookies and Cached images, Last 7 days).
  2. Disable browser extensions — ad blockers and privacy extensions (uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger) frequently break SSA login flows.
  3. Try a different browser — if you normally use Firefox or Safari, try Chrome or Edge for SSA access.
  4. Disable VPN — government portals sometimes block or flag VPN IP addresses, causing login loops.

Reason #1: Account Lockout After Failed Login Attempts

This is the most common issue. Login.gov locks accounts after several failed attempts, and the lockout isn't always obvious — you may just see a generic "error" message.

Fix:

  1. Go to login.gov and click Forgot Password even if you remember your password — this resets the lockout.
  2. Check your email for a reset link (check spam). The link expires in 1 hour.
  3. If you no longer have access to your original email address, go to login.gov/help and select Delete Account — then create a new Login.gov account and re-link it to SSA.

Important: Deleting your Login.gov account does NOT delete your SSA benefits record. Your SSI payments are unaffected. You're only removing the login credential, not your benefit status.

Can't Resolve It Online? Contact SSA Directly

  • SSA phone: 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778), Monday–Friday 8AM–7PM local time.
  • Local SSA office: Find yours at secure.ssa.gov/ICON/main.jsp — walk-ins are accepted for identity and account issues.
  • What to bring: Government-issued photo ID, your Social Security card or number, and any recent SSA correspondence (award letter, payment notice).

Bottom Line

Most SSI portal access problems trace back to one of three things: incomplete identity verification, an MFA code that isn't arriving, or an account lockout from too many failed attempts. Start with the lockout reset — it's free, takes two minutes, and solves the majority of cases. If Login.gov identity verification keeps failing online, the USPS in-person option is more reliable than retrying the digital flow.

YouTube Keeps Logging Me Out on Samsung Smart TV After the 2026 Update

If you've recently updated your Samsung Smart TV and now find yourself getting signed out of YouTube every few minutes, you're not alone. This issue spiked noticeably after the latest firmware rollout, and it's frustrating enough to make you want to throw the remote across the room. Here's what's actually going on, and how to fix it without resetting your entire TV.   Why This Is Happening The short version: the 2026 Tizen firmware update changed how Samsung TVs handle cached authentication tokens for third-party apps. YouTube relies on a locally stored session token to keep you logged in, and the update appears to be clearing or corrupting that token faster than it should — sometimes within minutes of signing in. This isn't a YouTube-side bug. It's a conflict between Samsung's updated app sandboxing and YouTube's token refresh cycle.   Common Fixes (Try These First) Restart the TV — Hold the power button for 5 seconds, not just a quick press. Amazon Order Stuck on "Preparing for Shipment" for Over a Week? Here's What's Really Happening

Your order says "Preparing for Shipment" and it hasn't moved in days. You've refreshed the tracking page a dozen times, maybe even called support and gotten a generic script read back to you. So what's actually going on, and is there anything you can do besides wait? Let's break it down. What "Preparing for Shipment" Actually Means This status doesn't mean your package is sitting untouched. It means Amazon's fulfillment center has confirmed your order but hasn't yet handed it off to a carrier for scanning. The label may already be printed. The item may already be boxed. It's the handoff step — between warehouse and shipping carrier — that's stalling. There are three common reasons this drags on past 2-3 days: Inventory mismatch — the system shows stock available, but the physical item isn't where it's expected to be in the warehouse, triggering a manual recount Carrier capacity issues — especially common arou...

Paid for YouTube Premium but Still Seeing Ads? Here's the Real Fix

You upgraded to YouTube Premium specifically to get rid of ads, and now they're still showing up. Before you contact support and sit through a generic troubleshooting script, here's what's actually causing this — and the fix that works when the obvious steps don't. The Three Most Common Reasons Premium Isn't Blocking Ads Not all ad situations are the same. Which one you're dealing with changes what you need to do. 1. Your account isn't signed in on the device showing ads This is the most common cause and the easiest to miss. YouTube Premium is tied to your Google account, not to the app or device. If you're watching while signed out — or signed into a different Google account — YouTube has no way of knowing you're a Premium subscriber. Check the account icon in the top-right corner of the YouTube app and confirm it shows your correct profile. 2. Your Premium subscription lapsed without warning YouTube sometimes fails to send a renewal failu...
